Spiti is not in Uttarakhand and this is not a route we can pretend is a normal booking.
Read this first: our rental agreement covers Uttarakhand. Taking a bike into Himachal Pradesh changes the insurance and permit position and must be agreed with us at booking, not decided on the road. We do arrange it — regularly — but it needs setting up properly before you leave, and we’ll decline if we hear about it afterwards. Terms →
With that settled: it’s one of the great rides in India.
The Two Ways In
Via Shimla and Kinnaur (the recommended direction in). Rishikesh → Dehradun → Paonta Sahib → Shimla → Narkanda → Rampur → Reckong Peo → Nako → Tabo → Kaza. Gains altitude gradually over several days along the Sutlej, which is much better for acclimatisation. It’s also where the road is at its most spectacular and, in places, most exposed.
Via Manali and Kunzum La (the recommended direction out). Kaza → Kunzum La → Batal → Gramphu → Manali. Shorter and much higher much faster — Kunzum La at around 4,590 m. This side opens later, typically June, and closes with the first serious snow.
Ride in via Kinnaur, out via Manali. It’s the standard advice for good reason: you acclimatise on the way up and you don’t ride the same road twice.
Rough Outline
| Day | Leg | Approx |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rishikesh → Shimla | 250 km |
| 2 | Shimla → Sarahan or Rampur | 150 km |
| 3 | → Reckong Peo / Kalpa | 130 km |
| 4 | Kalpa (acclimatisation day) | — |
| 5 | → Nako | 110 km |
| 6 | → Tabo | 65 km |
| 7 | → Kaza | 50 km |
| 8 | Kaza — Key, Kibber, Langza, Hikkim | local |
| 9 | → Chandratal via Kunzum La | 100 km |
| 10 | → Manali | 120 km |
| 11–12 | Manali → Rishikesh | 500 km |
Twelve days. Ten is possible and cuts the acclimatisation day, which is the day you shouldn’t cut.
Permits
- Inner Line Permit required for the stretch between Reckong Peo and Sumdo (the near-Tibet-border section). Issued at Reckong Peo, usually same-day
- Foreign nationals need the ILP and cannot travel solo in that sector — a minimum group size applies
- Requirements change. Confirm before you go
Which Bike
Himalayan 450 — ₹1,800/day at the 7+ rate. Twelve days is ₹21,600.
Everything about Spiti argues for it: sustained altitude where liquid cooling matters, the Batal–Gramphu section where clearance and suspension travel are not negotiable, water crossings, 500 km transit days, and long stretches with no fuel.
Himalayan 411 — ₹1,200/day at the 7+ rate. Thousands of people have ridden Spiti on a 411 and it’s a legitimate choice, especially for the roadside-simplicity argument. It’s harder work.
Nothing else in our fleet, for this route. We’d decline.
Fuel
Fuel is genuinely sparse in Spiti. The critical stretches:
- Reckong Peo → Kaza: roughly 200 km with very limited options in between
- Kaza → Manali: roughly 200 km over Kunzum La with nothing in between
A 17-litre tank at ~26 kmpl in that terrain gives roughly 440 km, which covers both — but plan every fill and carry a jerry can for the Kaza–Manali leg.
Before You Book This
Come and talk to us. Not because we’re precious about it, but because this is a twelve-day, 1,400 km, out-of-state trip at altitude on a rented motorcycle and there are four things to settle in person: the out-of-state paperwork, the bike prep, the fuel plan, and an honest conversation about whether your riding experience matches the Batal road.
We’ve sent plenty of people to Spiti and they’ve come back. The ones who had a bad time almost always compressed the itinerary.
