Uttarakhand has two halves and most riders only see one. Garhwal, west, is where the dhams are and where every route on this site so far has gone. Kumaon, east, is gentler, greener, more forested and considerably less visited by motorcycles.
Nainital is the front door. It’s also the most crowded thing in Kumaon, so the useful version of this trip treats Nainital as a stop rather than a destination and carries on to Mukteshwar, Binsar and Kausani.
The Route
The plains route (~280 km). Rishikesh → Haridwar → Najibabad → Kotdwar → Ramnagar → Kaladhungi → Nainital. Faster and duller — mostly flat, hot in summer, with the hill climb only in the last 30 km. Six to seven hours.
Via Corbett (~300 km). Same road as far as Ramnagar, then time in and around Jim Corbett National Park before continuing. This is the version we’d suggest. Ramnagar is a good overnight and the Kaladhungi–Nainital climb the following morning is a proper piece of riding.
Note that you cannot ride a motorcycle inside Corbett’s core zones — safaris are by park-authorised vehicle. Base yourself at Ramnagar and book one.
Beyond Nainital — The Actual Reason to Come
Nainital is a busy lake town. It’s pleasant and it is not why you rode 280 km.
Mukteshwar (~50 km). Orchards, deodars, a temple on a cliff, and views straight at Nanda Devi and Trishul on a clear morning. Far quieter than Nainital.
Binsar (~110 km). A wildlife sanctuary at around 2,400 m with one of the widest Himalayan panoramas in the state from Zero Point — Kedarnath peak to Nanda Devi to Panchachuli in a single sweep.
Kausani (~130 km). Gandhi called it the Switzerland of India, and the sunrise over the Trishul–Nanda Devi range is the reason people quote him. Tea gardens too.
Almora, Jageshwar, Ranikhet. Almora is the cultural centre of Kumaon. Jageshwar’s cluster of over a hundred stone temples in a deodar grove is genuinely extraordinary and gets almost no motorcycle traffic.
A five-day Kumaon loop — Ramnagar, Nainital, Mukteshwar, Binsar, Kausani, Almora, Jageshwar and back — is one of the best rides in the state and almost nobody from Rishikesh does it.
Which Bike
Mostly good sealed road, with a lot of highway distance.
Himalayan 450 — ₹2,000/day. The 280 km of highway each way is where six gears earn their keep. The most comfortable option by a distance.
Classic 350 — ₹1,300/day. Good value and comfortable enough. Slow on the plains stretch.
Guerrilla 450 — ₹1,800/day. Excellent on the hill roads of Kumaon, and the 11-litre tank means more fuel stops on the plains run.
Himalayan 411 — ₹1,400/day. Capable but slow across 280 km of highway. It’s the transit that’s against it, not the terrain.
Practical
Fuel: frequent and reliable the whole way. This is the one route on our site with no fuel planning required.
Traffic: Haridwar and the Najibabad stretch are busy plains highway with trucks. Ride it early.
Heat: May and June on the plains section are genuinely unpleasant — 40°C+ at Najibabad. Start at 5 AM or come in a different season.
Season: year-round. October to March is much better for the plains transit.
