Which Royal Enfield Should You Rent for Uttarakhand?
We have this conversation ten times a day. Here it is written down.
The short answer: pick by route, not by badge. The thing that decides whether a bike suits a Uttarakhand road is ground clearance and suspension travel. Engine size is almost never the constraint.
Start Here — What Road Are You Actually On?
| Your route | Take | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Around Rishikesh only | Activa 125 | ₹500/day, no gears, parks anywhere |
| First Royal Enfield, town + day rides | Hunter 350 | Lightest, lowest, most forgiving |
| Sealed hill roads, cruising, photos | Classic 350 | The icon, comfortable two-up |
| Fast sealed roads, corners | Guerrilla 450 | 40 bhp, low seat, sharpest handling |
| Kedarnath, Chopta, Gangotri | Himalayan 411 | 220 mm clearance, simple, fixable anywhere |
| Badrinath, Auli, full Chardham | Himalayan 450 | Six gears, liquid-cooled, 17-litre tank |
If you only read the table, you’ve got it.
The Numbers That Actually Matter
| Clearance | Suspension travel (F) | Tank | Range | Rate | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Activa 125 | ~160 mm | short | 5.3 L | ~265 km | ₹500 |
| Hunter 350 | 150 mm | ~130 mm | 13 L | ~440 km | ₹1,200 |
| Classic 350 | 170 mm | ~130 mm | 13 L | ~430 km | ₹1,300 |
| Guerrilla 450 | 169 mm | ~140 mm | 11 L | ~330 km | ₹1,800 |
| Himalayan 411 | 220 mm | 200 mm | 15 L | ~450 km | ₹1,400 |
| Himalayan 450 | 230 mm | 200 mm | 17 L | ~475 km | ₹2,000 |
Notice what isn’t in that table: horsepower. That’s deliberate. At 30 km/h in second gear on a hairpin behind a bus, which is most of Uttarakhand riding, power is not what you’re short of.
The Three Questions
1. Will any part of my route be unsealed, broken or under repair?
If yes → Himalayan, one or the other. This includes the Rudraprayag–Guptkashi stretch, the last 30 km to Chopta, anything past a landslide clearance, and the Bhatwari–Gangotri road.
If no → the road bikes are all in play and the Guerrilla is genuinely the most fun.
2. Am I riding two-up with luggage?
If yes → step up one level from whatever you’d have picked. A pillion and two bags eat ground clearance, suspension travel and power all at once.
3. How many hours a day, for how many days?
Under 4 hours a day → anything. 4–6 hours → comfort starts mattering. Classic or Himalayan. 6+ hours for multiple days → Himalayan 450. The sixth gear is the whole argument and it’s a good one.
Common Mistakes
Renting the Classic because it looks right, for a route it isn’t right for. Completely understandable and we’ll do it — we’ll just tell you first. Longer version →
Renting the Himalayan 450 for a two-day trip to Chopta. It’s ₹1,200 more than the 411 across the trip and the 411 does it just as well.
Renting the Guerrilla for the Chardham. 330 km of range against a 200 km fuel gap is the problem, not the bike. Fuel stop guide →
Renting a Royal Enfield to ride around Rishikesh for a week. ₹1,300 a day versus ₹500 for an Activa that’s easier in the Laxman Jhula lanes. If you’re not leaving town, you’re paying for the badge.
If You’re Under 5’6”
Seat heights: Hunter 790 mm · Guerrilla 780 mm · Himalayan 411 800 mm · Classic 805 mm · Himalayan 450 825 mm.
The Guerrilla and Hunter are the easiest to flat-foot. The Himalayan 450 has a low seat available at 805 mm — tell us your height when you book and we’ll fit it before you arrive.
Just Tell Me
Never ridden a Royal Enfield, staying near Rishikesh: Hunter 350. One good day of riding: Guerrilla 450, and go to Devprayag. Three days to Kedarnath: Himalayan 411. Twelve days, all four dhams: Himalayan 450. A month in Rishikesh for a yoga course: Activa 125 at ₹9,000.
